Warm up |

Knowing the rules The teacher ask the group to form a circle, the teacher may challenge them by saying they have 10 second to do it. Once the circle is formed, the parachute can be opened and the group should pick a colour on the parachute and hold this colour with both hands, with everyone stepping backwards to stretch out the parachute fully. The parachute should then be held at waist height, whilst the teacher goes over the 5 basic rules: Do not hold onto or put hands through the black handles. No body parts should go through the centre “air” hole. If asked to go under the parachute, do so in a safe, appropriate manner. If asked to go on top of the parachute, crawl onto it do not walk onto it, the same applies on the way off it. Listen to your teacher at all times. Once this is completed you are ready to start playing the games. |

Main Part |

The Washing Machine Children around the parachute should be given a number, two or three. All the number ones lie below the parachute on their backs, arms by their side, legs straight out and heads together in the middle. These children are the clothes that are going to be washed. All other children stand in a circle, holding the rim of the parachute at waist height. The group leader then uses the following commands: Turn washing machine on-lower the parachute and shake up and down. Add some washing powder – Move the parachute from side to side. Add water – Shake parachute up and down. Add fabric softener – side to side. Spin cycle – 10 steps clockwise, followed by 10 steps anti clockwise. Dry – Raise and lower the parachute three times. (mushroom) Favourites The children should all be standing around the parachute, with the teacher using the shout of “one, two, three, up” to create a “mushroom”. The teacher will then call out random things children may or may not like. These calls could be about certain foods (see flashcard 5), colours, sports, music groups etc. If a child likes what you call then they must walk underneath and move to a different space on the parachute. Dragon In the Cave A child is chosen to be the dragon in the cave and sits down under the parachute. The other children crouch down and hold the edge of the parachute. They call to the dragon: “ Fiery dragon in your cold, dark cave, whom will you choose to be bold and brave?” The dragon names two children. On the count of three, the children stand and make the parachute mushroom. The two children named try to cross the cave safely while the dragon tries to catch one of them. If the dragon is successful, the child who has been caught becomes the new dragon. If neither child is caught, the process is repeated and two different children are chosen. If the dragon fails to capture a victim after three attempts, a new dragon is chosen. |

Guess who's in the tent Choose one child to be the “guesser”. They turn their back on the other children, who move around the parachute to change their positions; the group of remaining children makes a tent and sits inside it. Once the children are hidden inside the tent, the child who is guessing walks around the parachute, tapping each child in turn on the shoulder. When a child is tapped they say, “I like sitting inside the tent”. The child outside has to listen to the voice and try to guess the identity of the speaker. They can ask the speaker to repeat the statement once more. The object of the game is to guess as many identities as possible. Once the guesser gets one wrong, they swap places with that person. |

Observations |
|
When the teacher explains the rules about how to use the parachute it is very important that he/she demonstrates the rules, in order to reinforce what he/she is explaining so pupils can understand these rules. Activity four allow us to work with different vocabulary. |
