BATTING

ORGANISATION

CONTENT

In teams of 4: striker (S), feeder (Fe) and two fielders (F).

WARM UP:

1- Hit and run

The striker and the feeder have their positions marked with cones 3 m apart from one another other . A hoop is placed a short distance away from striker. The ball is fed to striker who hits and runs around the cone behind the feeder. Striker must stop running when ball is placed in the hoop. How many runs can the striker do in 5 goes? They have to take turns to bat and field.

Work in pairs.

MAIN PART:

Skills: bowling

2- Bowling to each other.

Children are in pairs working on bowling action with the ball bouncing once 2/3 metres in front of their partner.

Pupils should work at their own level. For example; bowling from a standing position if they cannot run up and bowl, or throw overarm if they cannot stand and bowl.

(Teachers can use this activity to revise the skill covered on the previous lessons).

Skills: batting

3-GRIP.

Pupils should grip but as if to use a bat edge like an axe. Right handers should have their right hand at the bottom hand and the left hand at the top of the handle. (There should be no space between the two hands). For left handers –vice-versa.

The teacher explains and shows them how to grip and give them time to practice.

In groups of 4.

4- Batting practice 1:

Children work in groups of 4(1 fielder, 1 feeder, 1 batter, 1 wilk). The feeder bounces the ball in a circle. The batter “pulls” the ball towards fielder (indoors against wall). If feeders bounce the ball in circle, the batter can hit the ball easily. As the feeder is about to throw the ball he/she should say “bat up/bat back” – the batter should take the bat back in preparation to hit the ball. Wilk should pick up the balls that the batter cannot hit.

After ten hits we can rotate the members of the group.

5- Batting practice 2:

Children work in groups of 4 (1 batter, 1 feeder, 2 fielders). The feeder drops the ball in circle and the batter hits the ball after the second bounce towards the fielders. The batter should stand sideways on, in front of the cone/marker/wickets, with feet hip width apart and the bottom of the bat resting on the ground behind the back foot. When the feeder drops the ball the batter should take the bat back and step with the front foot towards the ball hitting the ball on the second bounce on the half volley.

In groups of 4.

GAME;

6- TARGET CRICKET

Children play target cricket in groups of 4 and as above. The feeder drops the ball into circle for the batter who attempts to hit the ball after the second bounce between the 2 markers. Every time the batter succeeds he/she scores 1 point. We will change after the feeder has dropped ten balls.

For the batter:

The batter has to attempt to steer the ball between the markers – emphasise the use of the top hand to guide the ball.

Grip:

- The bat is held comfortably with both hands as shown; left hand on top.

Stance:

- The player stands sideways with feet about 8- 15 cm apart; left foot forward.

- Hands should rest against left thigh.

- Left shoulder and elbow point towards bowler.

- The player should not crouch down; weight should be equally divided between the feet.

For the feeder: feeder should stand on bat side of batter and drop ball into circle.

For the fielders: fielders retrieve the ball and return to feeder.
