WARM UP

1- 1 v 1

In partners; A has to mark B, and B has to dodge. Dodgers must use change of speed and direction to get “free”. They have to go from one line to the other of the grid. So if dodgers can manage to reach the other line of the grid they get a point. They then change over roles and repeat 5 times each.

They can try to do this activity with one stick each and a ball. A then has to dribble the ball to the other line of the grid for a point.

MAIN PART: Skills; hitting

2- 2 v 2

In groups of 4; 2 are attackers and 2 are defenders. Attackers have to try to pass the ball. They get a point for 3 consecutive passes. They have to try to keep possession giving passes in different directions or dribbling to make a space, then pass the ball. They must work hard to dodge into a space to receive a pass. (They don't have to score in this activity). Then, change over roles.

Approximately 10m apart.

Well spaced out.

Change spacing for different abilities.

3- Hitting and stopping.

Children work in partners. One of them hits the ball and the other stops it. When they hit the ball, it has to be in front of them, their wrists should be firm and follow through: STEP-SWING-HIT. They have to change the grip (to hands apart) for control in stopping.

The teacher has to check the grip – players should slide right hand up beside left hand to hit.

? Where is the best position for the ball? Level with front foot.

? Why do we change the grip to hit? Longer swing, more power.

10m x 10m

4- Receive and hit round or across the square.

Children are divided in groups of 4. They are in each corner of the grid. They can hit the ball round (to the child next to them) or across (to the child in front of them in an imaginary diagonal). To receive the ball they have to move feet quickly in line with the ball, stick down. They have to change grip and step in the direction of their hit and follow through.

In groups of 8

5- 1 v 1 Dribble and shoot with a hit from the cones.

Children are divided in groups of 8. As each child has a partner there are 4 couples in each group. They line up in 2 sides, each of the couple in different sides. Both of them have a stick and a ball. When the teacher says “GO” the first couple starts; they dribble and shoot from the line/cones. The first to score gets 1 point. They have 4 attempts before changing sides. When one has thrown the ball, he/she has to collect their own ball and return down the side.

It is important to shoot from the cones and try not to stop when shooting. They should tap the ball slightly further, change grip and shoot.

6- HOWITZER

2 v 2 or 4 v 4

Children are divided in groups of 4 (in order to play 2 v 2) or in groups of 8 (in order to play 4 v 4). Players must stay in their own area; they are not allowed to cross the centre line at any time. Each player must receive a pass before an attempt to score. Players have to try to hit the ball over the opponent's line for 1 point. They have to move to support each other and create spaces for the “shot”. The ball must be stopped or controlled before passing or hitting. There is not first time hits.
