TEACHING POINTS

Number of players:

4 in each team

WARM UP: passing, tackling

1-Split Enz

There are 2 teams of 4-5 children. Teams have to score in the opposite goal. The game starts with a pass from the end-line. Players have to pass backwards and keep the ball below shoulder height. Tries are scored by running through either of the opposition's goals (there are two goals to each team). Players can be tagged (when they have the ball) to stop them running by touching them with two hands at the waist. If ball goes out we have to restart with a pass from the sideline. After a try restart from the end line.

Changes to the game:

Players may not move with the ball; they must pass from where they caught/received the ball. Score in same way.

Mix younger and older players.

If more players in team, have 2 players inn end zone. (change these players regularly to avoid boredom or cold)

Easier: no tagging, play with interception only.

Harder: move end-lines further apart, with smaller, narrower end-line. Each player on the team must touch ball before scoring.

Working in groups of 3.

They can be placed in like in a triangle shape.

MAIN PART: Skills; lineout, throw and catch

2- Throw and catch

The class is divided in groups of 3 (A, B, C). A throws the ball over B, who jumps, arms outstretched, to catch it. As B jumps and catches ball he/she turns towards C (scrum half) and feeds i.e. passes the ball to him/her.

3 throws, then change position.

Working with a partner.

3- Lineout, throw and catch

a)Two hands underarm.

The one who has the ball is the thrower, and has to throw the ball to his/her partner. It is important to encourage the thrower to throw over the top of the jumper so that he/she has to jump to catch it –above his/her head with both feet off the ground, and encourage thrower to hold the ball so that the end of the ball points towards the jumper. After the first throw of the ball, the jumper becomes the thrower.

b) 2 hands overhead (soccer throws in).

The one who has the ball is the thrower and he/she has to throw the ball to his/her partner. The thrower should hold the ball with two hands and throw it over his/her partner's head. After the first throw the ball, the jumper becomes the thrower.

c)1 hand

The same as before but now the thrower has to pass the ball holding it with one hand.

Game should be played on an appropriate sized area.

Eg 30m x 50 m or larger.

GAME:

4- 7 v 7/ 8 v 8/ 9 v 9

We will play using 3 man scrum to restart the game after a forward pass. When ball goes out of play –instead of re-starting play with a free pass as previously, play is re-started with a line-out. The hooker throws in and either of the props can jump and catch it and feed it t his/her scrum half. The opposing team is not allowed to jump for the ball.

Both teams must ensure that all other players apart from the forwards and the scrum half are at least 7 metres back from the line out.

In the line out:

•  The first player must be between 2 and 5m from the out line.

•  The hooker throws the ball into the line out gap between both lines.

•  The catch is uncontested and the ball is caught with outstretched arms about the head with both feet off the ground

No players from remainder team can leave the line-out until the ball is in the hands of the scrum half .
