Soweto

Soweto was and is a very special place. Created as a ghetto for blacks, who were forced to live there in poverty , it also gave South Africa many heroes who fought against Apartheid. Photos by Maria Rosa Batlle

1- Soweto: Overview

2-Hector Peterson. Monument to honor Hector Peterson, a young school boy who was killed in 1976 by the police when he and other students were protesting agaisnt the law that forced them to study Afrikaans, the language they view as the language of Apartheid. The monument was unveiled by Nelson Mandela.

6- Haircut. The people in Soweto are very resourceful to find a living ! Here, with a few tins a woman has built her own Haircut Shop! The prices (in 1992) are listed in "R" , Rands, the official currency of South Africa.
