  La diada

The diada is celebrated on 11th  September, the Diada is the day of the Catalan Nation, every 11 of September the people of Catalonia hang the flags of Catalonia on the windows and naturally it is a day off work and school.

In the past, Catalonia was like another normal province of Spain but in the year 1713 the Spanish people with the French soldiers attacked Catalonia and besieged Barcelona for thirteen months, when the Spanish troops entered in Barcelona they restricted the Catalan language and closed lots of official buildings.

But after, when Dictator Franco died the Catalans were allowed to use the Catalan language again and they  re-opened the closed institutions.

Today Catalonia is very powerful in Spain,  the new constitution makes a better system of taxes and the economic system. In this day Catalonia is a nation.

"Tornarem a lluitar. Tornarem a sofrir. Tornarem a včncer!!!"
"We shall fight again! We shall suffer again! We shall overcome again!"

Saint George’s day

Saint George’s day is a very important and popular festivity here, in Catalonia. We celebrate it on 23rd  April. People go to the street and buy roses and books. The boys give a rose to the girls and the girls give a book to the boy. It is also known as the day of lovers.

Along one of the main streets in Barcelona, Las Ramblas, hundreds of stands of roses and makeshift bookstalls are hastily set up for the occasion.

During this day, the schools prepare paper roses, dragon pictures of Saint George pictures, pictures about the legend...
