Mr. Dursley is the director of a firm called Grunnings, which make drills. He is a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he has a very large moustache. Mrs. Dursley is thin and blonde and has nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which comes in very useful as she spends so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbours. The Dursleys have a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there is no finer boy anywhere.

The Dursleys have everything they want, but they also have a secret, and their greatest fear is that somebody may discover it. They don't think they could bear it if anyone finds out about the Potters. Mrs. Potter is Mrs. Dursley's sister, but they haven't met for several years; in fact, Mrs. Dursley pretends she doesn't have a sister, because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband are as un-Dursleyish as it is possible to be.
