Learning outcomes

1. Learn parts of the visible eye.

2. Learn parts of the internal structure of the eye.

3. Understand functions of the different parts.

4. Understand that the iris controls the size of the pupil.

5. Learn that the iris reacts to the amount of light.

Children will be able to:

1. Label drawings of the eye.

2. Suggest functions to match structures.

3. Complete labelled diagrams.

4. Demonstrate the action of the iris and pupil.

1. Recap the function and application of lenses. Set question - Which part of our body is conneced with light and lenses?

2. Tell pupils that they are going to do two different activities:

Activity 1 - In pairs, observe and make drawings of the main parts of the eyes. Label known structures and make suggestions about their functions. Share.

- We have two eyes.

- Eye lashes and eyebrows keep the eyes clean.

- Iris is the coloured part of the eye. It controls the amount of light entering the eye.

- Pupil is in the middle-It's the hole which light enters.

Acvivity 2 - The pupil. Carry out investigation into the size of the pupil. Record results and encourage pupils to make connections between the pupil size and light intensity.

Dim light - iris small, pupil big to allow light in.

Bright light - plenty to see - control amount to prevent damage to the eye - iris big, pupil small.

4. Pupils watch a PowerPoint presentation and complete Worksheet 23.
