Session 36 - The Interaction between humans and their environment
Aims

1. To be aware that an environment provides the thigs that all living creatures need to survive.

2. To know that humans manipulate the environment and this affects other living things.

3. Learn that human action can also affect farming, fishing and other local industries.

4. Recycling is a tool of conservation and can help reduce the litter and pollutio problem.

5. To know that some animals are now extinct

Learning outcomes

1. Learn that an environment provides the things that all living creatures need to survive.

2. Learn that humans manipulate the environment and this affects other living things.

3. Learn that human action can also affect farming, fishing and other local industries.

4. Learn that Recycling is a tool of conservation and can help reduce the litter and pollution problems.

5. We can take positive action to reduce rm to the environment.

6. Be aware that some animals are now extinct because of human activity.

7. Learn that most rare species are protected by law and considered to be endangered.

Children will be able to:

1. Memorise key vocabulary and phrases.

2. Talk about the Earth.

3. Talk about the interaction between humans and their environmentin relation to aspects such as farming, fishing and other local industries.

4. Talk about the importance of recycling materials.

1. Discuss the term "environment". Elicit through discussion that environment means the surroundings in which pople, plants and animals live and that environment provides the things that all living creatures need to survive. Brainstorm what we need to survive: (e.g. air, water, food, shelter, tools..) Where do we get these requirements from? our enviromnent.

2. Elicit through discussion, how our environment supports our needs. (e.g. we build houses to live in, roads to get us to many places, shops to provide us with food, factories to produce goods). Talk about developments in the local area. What was there before? Talk about the fact that humans manipulate the enviromnent in many ways . Investigate the effects of a local industry in the enviromnent. Look at aspects such as the destruction of natural habitats, the effects of pollution, erosion. Discuss.

3. Summarise points as to how human action can affect our environment (e.g. air pollution from cars, factory emissions, water pollution, from oil spills, industrial dumping.). Brainstorm and record ways in which our actions can affect farming, fishing, forestry and local industry. Pupils complete worksheet 36 on "How people affect the environment. Discuss on completion.

4. Pupils complete the group discussion task detailed on Teacher information Sheet 36a. this refers to things which we can do in our daily lives which reduce harm to the enviromnent. Teacher records pupils' suggestions . Reinforce the point that we all have an important part to play in looking after the environment and what we do now will affect future generations.

5. Elicit through discussion, the definition of "reclycling", the process of breaking down a material and rebuilding it to make a new product. Why is this an issue? Use Teacher information Sheet 36b to stimulate further discussion on the vast amounts of waste which we create ans the problems disposing of it.

6. Pupils watch a video about ways of recycling at school.

7. Write the word "extinct". Ask pupils for a definition. Invite pupils to suggest examples of anials which are now extinct e.g. dinosaurs. Invite pupils to speculate on why they became extinct. Elicit the following possibilities: climate, habitat destruction, natural disasters, human activity (over-fishing, hunting, pollution of rivers and lakes).Using CD encyclopaedia, ask pupils to list examples of extinct animals. Piscuss findings.Discuss pupils' perceptions of endangered species. Pupils choose an endangered animal and compile an organised and illustrated report. This report should include why the species has become endangered and which steps are being taken to ptotect it. Pupils complete Worksheet 36b and present their completed work to the rest of the class.
