When we went underground it was very dark. Here is a small tunnel with a cart on it. The carts used to run on train tracks. We had to bend down to walk through the tunnels which connected the huge caverns. |
Here is a picture taken at the beginning of last century. It shows the men ready to go down into the mine with a cart. Notice how they are dressed in smart clothes, none of them are wearing safety gear. |

Here is another picture of the cart moving. They went quite fast along the tracks. They would be used to carry the miners down the mine and carry the slate back up to the surface. These pictures were in the museum at Llechwedd Slate Caverns. |
When we were down in the mine, we were shown how they used dynamite to break the slate. In the picture here we have a dynamite carrier, fuse wire and tools to make a hole in the rock. The miners would run for cover once the use was lit. |
