Here is a picture of Tom trying to make a hole in the rock. He is being watched by a real miner who still works at the mine. There are some 40 miners still working here, however a hundred years ago there would have been 800! |
Here is a picture of a hole in the wall where the dynamite was put. As you can see it is at an angle of 90 degrees from the grain if the slate. We think that the people who did this were very brave. |

Underground there were little huts called 'Y Caban'. This is where the miners used to have their lunch. They would eat for quarter of an hour and then discuss topical issues for another quarter of an hour. They used to sing and say poems too. |
Underground we could not see anything at all unless the lights were on. The miners used to work using candle light. Boys as young as eight used to work in the mines. Many died young because of lung disease. |
