ACTIVITY 11: MUSICAL ARCHITECTURE

To undertake this activity you need to explain to pupils the concept of the phrase, and its subdivisions and periods. You will need to explain the meaning of suspensive ending, and conclusive ending. Once these concepts have been absorbed, pupils will be introduced to musical forms of small structures based on repetition and variation. In addition to creating their own structures and analysing those contained in Music files, pupils should also exercise themselves in the most basic forms through listening to other works.

Here are a few examples:

Lied in 3/4:
Arabic dance from Edward Grieg's Suite no. 2.
Pieces nos. 9 and 12 from Schumann's Album of Youth.

Minuet:
Third movement from Mozart's Kleine nacht music K525.
Third movement from Haydn's Symphony no. 101 in D major "The Clock".

Rondo:
Third movement from Beethoven's Op. 37 concert for piano and orchestra no. 3 in C minor.
Fourth movement from Mozart's Small Night Music K525.

Variacions:
Second movement from Haydn's Symphony nš94 in G Major "The Surprise".
Second movement from Mozart's Divertissement nš15 in B major K287.
