ACTIVITY 2: USING THE TOOLS

The object of this activity is to familiarise pupils with computers and the program to be used. First they must learn to start up and close down the computer and the screen. It would be advantageous for the pupils to differentiate the working disk, i.e. the A: or C: drive (in case of doubt consult an operating system manual). If the work is to be done on disk, take advantage of this first contact to teach pupils how disks are formatted.

According to the program chosen it will be necessary to redraft and explain its operating instructions. The fundamental objective of the activity is to familiarise the pupil with editing notes and silences, keys, voices, file retrieval, help, listening to files,......

If you opt for the Music program, here are the basic commands for the programme (arrow keys, space bar, the keys + (plus sign) and - (minus sign), the F1 key (help), F2 (listen to the piece) and R (retrieve the piece). With these few basic commands pupils can experiment freely with the program, and become familiar with the technology, which may be new to some of them. You might suggest to them to retrieve and listen to a piece, and also to retrieve a variety of pieces to get to know the files that come with the program.
