ACTIVITY 4: LONG AND SHORT. SILENCE!

This activitiy is designed exclusively for work on the quality of duration. The approach of working on the qualities one by one reponds to the objective of analysing and assimilating pitch and duration separately. In the following activity the two qualities will be worked on jointly.

We will study the most elementary note values available within the program and their corresponding rests.

Figures musicals

It is worth explaining to pupils how to alter the values of notes and rests (with the mouse, using the palette, with the cursor...). Usually musical score editors detect any errors in the values of notes. However pupils should be aware that if they make errors with the values the editor will detect them, since it will either write a different value or not allow that value to be written.

In the program Music, a broken line is written if mistakes are made with values.

They will practise listening to how a piece changes when the tempo is varied. Likewise they will be introduced to the study and practice of different compasses. To complete exercise 12 you need to introduce the concept of legato. For exercise 13 you also need to listen to the two voices at the same time. Here are two suggestions:

  1. Listen to the piece using two computers simultaneously, voice 1 on one computer and voice 2 on the other. In this way, the work approaches the concept of playing in groups.
  2. Listen to the piece using MIDI features. You need to assign two channels and two instruments (one to each voice). Listening to the voices using different instruments helps appreciate the equivalences between the values of the two melodies.

In the Music program there are several listening options available according to the peripherals used: PC-MONO,PC-POLI, MIDI-MPU, (external synthesizer), ADLIB-FM (internal synthesizer).
