ACTIVITY 4:
LONG AND SHORT. SILENCE!
To carry out exercises 1 and 2 deactivate the compass.
- Write all the notes (quarters, eighths...) possible with the program, along with their equivalent rests. Listen to them and copy them to your notebook ordered from longest to shortest duration.

Using the program "Music": use the + and - keys and the Space Bar.

- Rewrite the exercise, this time writing the corresponding rest at the side of each note. Listen to it and test to see if the silences are of the same duration as the notes.
Reactivate the compass and set it to 4/4.

Using the program "Music": activate the compass with the 0 key and change the compass using the key C.
|
- How many whole notes can you write in one bar of 4/4?, and half notes?, and quarters?, and eighths?, and sixteenths? To conclude, complete the following sequence of equivalents:
- Copy this extract on to the screen:
Rewrite this extract, this time doubling the value of each note.
Write it yet another time, now with the values half that of the original.

- Copy the following popular English song on to the screen and into your notebook:
Merrily we roll along

Play it.
Change tempo to Lento and listen to it. Listen to it again in various tempos: Andante, Presto, Largo y Allegro. Put these four tempos in order from slowest to fastest.
Change the compass to 2/4. What difference can you see in the bar lines?

- Write 10 different combinations of notes to complete a compass of 2/4 (you may use notes and rests). Listen to the resulting rhythms. For example:
- Complete the following compasses with one note (half, quarter or eighth):
- Put the bar lines into the following extract. Then test to see if you have done it correctly by copying it onto the screen.

Deactivate the compass. This is the melody from the song Cucu, cucu Enter it into the computer and listen to it. Then look for the most suitable values for each note and silence, followed by the compass and tempo.
- How many quarter notes fit into a compass of 3/4? And eighths?
How many half notes fit into a compass of 3/2? And quarters? And in a compass of 4/2?
How many eighth notes fit into a compass of 2/8? And quarter notes? And a compass of 4/8?
- Copy this extract of the The theme from Beethoven's 9th symphony on to the screen and make any corrections necessary to make it sound alright. (There are three errors).
- Copy this extract to the screen. Switch to voice 2. Write a second voice using notes of the same pitch, with different durations. Listen to the two voices at the same time. For instance, where there is a half note C replace it with four eighths.

Using the program "Music": change to voice 2 (key V). Change to PC-POLI or ADLIB-FM (key *).

- Write a melody of eight bars into the computer using only whole and half notes, in 4/4 time. Copy it into your notebook.
Switch to voice 2. Write the same melody changing the values (half, quarter...) of the notes but leaving the pitch intact. Use quarters, eighths and sixteenths.

Using the program "Music": change to voice 2 (key V).

Listen to the two voices together.
Try to do the same again with a third voice.

Using the program "Music": change to PC-POLI or ADLIB-FM. Try to do the same again with voice 3.
Using the program "Music": Try to change the rhythmic structure: see how the song YELLOW sounds with the rhythmic structure of IMAGINE (notes, compass and tempo). To do this , first load the piece YELLOW, press X and select the song IMAGINE. Write what you find in your notebook.
