ACTIVITY 7: THE MUSICAL PALETTE To undertake this activity the computer needs to be connected to a synthesizer via the MIDI interface, or have a sound card. It is important to have the computer ready to receive data through the selected channels. The aim of this activity is to make sure pupils understand the importance of timbre or colour in musical composition. Timbre is one of the most expressive factors and which most influences the impression a piece gives, so any alterations made define the character of the composition. As we don't usually have a synthesizer for each group of pupils, the exercises in this activity may be done collectively. If no synthesizer or internal sound card is available the activity will not be possible.
