What do you know about pentominoes?

 

ACTIVITY 1: HOW MANY DIFFERENT PENTOMINOES CAN YOU MAKE?

 

A pentomino is a shape made up of 5 equal squares touching edge to edge.
These are pentominoes: This is not a pentomino:

 

Can you make a prediction?

 

 

Use squared paper and make some.
When you think you have finished, ask your teacher: How many pentominoes are there?
Take a photo of your pentominoes.  

 

ACTIVITY 2: 5x5

 

 
Fill a square 5x5 with five pentominoes.
Use plastic pentominoes.
There are at least 5 solutions with one repeated.

Record some solutions and then set them for others to solve. You can take some photos.

 

Find at least 1 solution to fill a square 5x5 with five pentominoes where all the pieces are different. Take a photo.

There are at least 10 solutions.
