Talk about

Discovering how to weave single strands of plants or animal fibre into one solid piece was one of the human race's earliest achievements.

A loom:
the frame that supports the weaving. There are different choices, cardboard, plywood, polystyrene tray.

How to string a loom. Tape the end of the warp thread to the loom and wind it around the tray though the top to the bottom slits from one side to the other, then cut the thread from the ball and tie it to the the end.

How to weave, All weaving has two main sets of thread, the warp and the weft. The warp is the lacing thread and the weft is the filling thread.

How to release the weaving from loom, by cutting the warp thread at the back of the loom and tying the ends in pairs to stop the weaving from unravelling.

Sketchbook
To collect samples and pictures of woven fabrics and stick some in there.
To write down the meaning of the words: warp, weft, loom, slit, shuttle.
Make a list of the materials they need to use and colours and at the end make a coloured sketch of their finished weaving
.

Doing

Activity 1: Woven paper

Use any kind of coloured paper, textured paper, marbling paper or plastic from carried bags.
1 - Cut a large square, heart, star from thin cardboard. Then cut slits of about 1cm down the shape with a craft knife. Don't cut right to the edges.
2 - Cut strips of papers and weave it through the slits and put it over and under in the opposite way to the strip above.
3 - Carry on weaving until filled the bottom part.
4 - When the shape is completed filled cut the edges of strips.
5 - Turn your weaving over and use a piece of tape to secure the strips.

Activity 2: Weaving

1 - Choose the loom, the polystyrene tray for example and some scissors. Cut slits at the top and bottom of it, making sure they face each other.
2 - Take some thread, tape the end on to the back of the tray and begin wrapping the rest top to bottom through the cut slits across the tray. When you reach the other side cut the thread leaving enough for you to tie it to the end and taped down as the start.
3 - With your loom ready, choose material you are going to use and begging weaving with them, one at a time, in and out of the warp thread starting at the top of the loom.
4 - At the end of each row remember to turn and recross the front of the loom, and not to go round the back of it.
5 - Push the woven thread closely together from time to time to keep a firm weave with a plastic fork.
6 - When you reach the bottom of your loom you finished weaving cold be kept on the loom or released from it.
7 - To remove it you will need to cut carefully through the warp threads at the back of the loom and tie the ends together in pairs to stop your weaving from unravelling.

Developing the idea

  • Use the marbling paper for the paper weaving.
  • Weave in a colour family. e.g. different shades of green.
  • Weave in warm or cold colours.
  • Weave with different kind of material in each row
  • Weave in a stripy pattern that repeats itself.
  • Use the colours and shapes from an abstract painting.
  • Make a weaving based on a descriptive title, e.g. the storm, the sea, seasons.
  • Make a table-mat or a chess board or draughts board.

Assessment

- It is the work ordered/ balanced or it is chaotic or disturbing?
- To compare ideas, methods and approaches in their own work and others work.
- To describe how they would develop it further, their own work or others work.
