Teaching a second language is more than a mechanical and repetitive learning with structures and words. We know that children can communicate with this foreign language if we offer them a significant and a creative context, where they have to contribute with their knowledge and with their capacities from the beginning.

Therefore, the staff in CEIP Mare de Déu del Portal in Batea –Terra Alta- together with the head teacher thought that it will be really interesting to offer another curricular area in English. The selected area was Art and Design.

In our school, we have taught this for some time in Cicle Superior from different artists and different artistic movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. In this way, our pupils know how to appreciate the heritage of their own country and the one of other countries and of different historical moments.

The artistic movement chosen, after being working for eight months in Scotland, is the Arts and Crafts movement. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was an innovator and undoubtedly one of Scotland’s most celebrated architects, so I will work this movement from the Catalan artists Antoni Gaudí, Alexandre de Riquer and Santiago Rusiñol making a parallelism with this Scottish artist.
