Searching information with infoseek 

Infoseek search engine is a bit different from Altavista. It is subject directory based. This means that the information is organized under different categories. This facilitates the search, as you only have to click on a category, then another one, and another one till you find what you want. The first set of categories is something like this:  

 
 
 
Now you will visit some sites from Infoseek and see how it works. Follow the instructions below: 
  1. Go to Infoseek (infoseek) search engine.
  2. Look at the site thoroughly and try to compare it with Altavista front page. Can you see many differences?.
  3. Read the different channels or directories in the "Tune in to our channels" box. How many different channels are there??.
  4. Click on Entertainment. Scroll this page up and down. How many different things could you learn about on this page?
  5. Focus on the menu on the left, titled "web sites" and read the different categories related with entertainment. Choose Movies.
  6. Have a look at this new page. There is a section called "Movies topics". Click on  Popular Movies, and then on Jurassic Park.
  7. This time focus on the list of entries and answer the following questions in your personal file. Save the document as "uni1tas3b". Then compare your answers with the ones you wrote about Altavista search engine.
 
  • How many documents match this query?
  • How many sites were offered on the first "set of responses"?
  • How many additional pages did this search engine offer?
  • Is the URL (the address) written as an URL as well as hypertexted in the name of this page? What for?
  • Does each entry have a short, helpful summary? Does this summary help you to know what the entry is about?
  • Are all the entries in English?
  • Can you choose the language? How?
  • What other type of information does this search engine offer?
