STUDENT'S TASKS:

 Task 1

After reading the general aims of unit 4 and task 1, students follow the instructions in task 1. Before Ss read the dialogue "Why can't we wear our jeans" make them discuss the 3 questions in small or big groups. After reading the dialogue, Ss translate the words and phrases in the box and do the task about the phrases for agreeing and disagreeing. Make sure Ss save the document.

After doing task 3 students do task 4. Make sure students use the key phrases to state their opinions about the sentences. They can do task 4 as homework. Make them write the sentences and the key phrases down so that they can take them home.

TIMING: 1 session

As EXTRA  task, or even as homework, Ss could do task 1 from the same document. The text "Bits about the BRITS" is very interesting. They will have to read it in task 4, anyway.

 Task 2

Explain the Ss that Internet offers another motivating way to make students of English read and write in English by participating in forums and discussion groups. Among others, there are two good sites to do it: Dave's ESl Cafe and the International House.  Students like those sites.

Task 2 is so guided in order to avoid "connection" problems. Nevertheless, if you have no problems to be online make your students choose their topics and write and answer the messages they want to.

If you have access to Internet in only one computer you can make your students come to this computer by pairs and send their message, while the others go on with task 2 or begin doing tasks 3 and 4.

TIMING: 1 session

 Task 3

Before joining any chat make students read   "Bits about the Brits", about young British style. Discuss on it with the whole group, just to elicit ideas and make students talk about it.

ANSWERS
Punk style
Goths
Acid House movement
Grunge movement

Repeat the steps with the short story about Fiona and John.  This can also open a debate about appearances and personalities and make students give and argue their opinions. Make them use the right vocabulary, expressions, phrases, etc.

Finally Ss join a chat. (I will give more instructions when you reach this point).
As it will not be possible to make students participate at the same time, I suggest you make students join the chat by pairs and allow they participate during 15 minutes. You may prefer to group them in fours and give them half an hour. Make sure your students talk about the article! The rest of the students can go ahead with task 4 or even begin with unit 5.
If joining a Chat is not possible use “Conversa” a  program which allows two computers to communicate between them (windows/programes/conversa).
Another alternative is to to visit and contribute to online chats in Excite or Infoseek you may know more), very easy to join.

If you want to know more about CHATS, visit the English Language Institute Technology Tip of the Month (chat information).  Focus on the vocabulary section.

TIMING: 2 sessions

  Task 4

Tell Ss to follow the instructions offered in task 4 to write the fourth letter to their key pals. Tell them to alternate this site and their word processor. Students go to document "letter 4: in my opinion", read the vocabulary and the phrases and then write the letter. Send the letters as soon as you have them.  I suggest make Ss write the letter at home, and take all their time.

IMPORTANT: You may think it is not necessary to write and discuss about a new topic. These  guides  are only "guides", so feel free to do what you think best.

Make students write the message to me. Focus on the questions in the box. Make sure these messages reach me. Thank you!!
