The construction of the Empire State Building began on March 17, 1930 and the building was finished in May 1931. It has 102 floors|storeys, and the last 14 have the shape of a pyramid. This tower is about 60 metres high and topped with a dome. The total height of the building including the antennas is 448 metres. Its architect was William Lamb. People can only go by lift to the 102nd floor. The 110 storey Sears Tower with its 441 metres is the tallest|the highest building in North America. It's a combination of ingenuity and innovation. It was built in 1973 and renovated in 1993. Its architects were Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. It includes eight different restaurants. The 296-metre, 70-storey Yokohama Landmark Tower is not only the highest building in Japan but also Yohohama's symbol. It is also the nation's biggest development complex, with everything from office, hotel and commercial space to an observation deck|viewing platform|observatory, on the 69th floor. Its construction started in 1991, and it was opened in 1993. It is not as tall|as high as some buildings in other countries but no other tower has an elevator as fast as this one. The Mitsui is the lowest building in the picture above, although it is considered to be the first skyscraper constructed in the new urban center of Tokyo, Japan. It has a height of only 156 metres and 36 storeys but it is earthquake-resistant like the Yokohama Landmark Tower. The Jinmao Building it is not as tall as|as high as the Sears Tower but higher than|taller than four of the buildings in the picture. Its viewing platform is situated on a higher floor than the first observatory of the Empire State building. It is located on the 88th floor, and you can have wonderful views over the city. Until April 2004 The Petronas were the tallest buildings in the world. They were opened on August 28, 1999. They are two identical towers linked by a bridge at the 41st floor. The builders didn't intend to surpass Chicago's Sears Tower; they only wanted to construct|build a monument announcing Kuala Lumpur's prominence as a commercial and cultural capital. Since April 2004 the tallest building in the world is the Taipei 101 Building in Taipei, capital of Taiwan. The Taipei 101 Building has 101 storeys. It has fewer storeys than the Sears Tower, with 108 floors, but more than the Petronas, with 88 storeys in each tower. The Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris in 1889 commemorating a hundred years of the French Revolution. At that time the construction of the tower was not totally accepted. The Eiffel Tower was the world's tallest building till 1930, with its 300 metres (320.75 m including antenna).
