What a Night! Listen and fill in the gaps

A man and a woman all dressed in black got off a big motorbike outside a smart house. The huge gate squeaked when they opened it. They walked to the front door and tried to force it, with no luck. They went to the back door and broke a window pane.

The noise woke Sarah up. She woke her husband up. They went back to sleep.

The burglars opened the door carefully and walked to the reading room. They opened the safe. Suddenly the alarm went off. They ran away with empty hands.

The Story of a Life
  Gustave Eiffel

Eiffel was born in Dijon on 15 December 1832. He began his education at the Lyçée Royal in Dijon and later attended the Collège Sainte-Barbe in Paris. He graduated from The Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in 1855.

In 1862 Eiffel married Marie Gaudelet and they had five children. She died of pneumonia in 1878. From 1857 to 1864 he worked as an engineer for the French Western Railway Company, building innovative bridges.

In 1866 he founded his own engineering company, Eiffel Inc. From then on, and before he won the design competition for the building that would commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, he completed many works:

  • the Rouzat Viaduct, which crosses the Sioule River in France,
  • a Victorian style department store, the Magasin au Bon Marche, in Paris in 1876,
  • the Nyugati Railroad Station in Budapest, Hungary,
  • Maria-Pia Bridge, over the Douro River in Porto, Portugal,
  • the Garabit Viaduct over the Truyere River in France,
  • the interior workings of The Statue of Liberty.

The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889.

  Interview to Eiffel's great-granddaughter
Q: Welcome to our session (section) “Interviews”. Today we’re happy to hold this programme at Gustave Eiffel’s great-granddaughter’s house. Good morning. Thank you for your warm welcome and for accepting to answer a few of our questions.
A: It’s a pleasant (pleasure)!
Q: Your great-grandfather’s words (works) are scattered around, aren’t they?
A: Indeed, from New York to Girona, El pont dels vianants.
Q: Really? There is one of his works there (here) in Catalonia… What a surprise! I didn’t know. One of his works in Catalonia, what an honour! Where else can people admire his work?
A: Let me think… Bridges in France, Spain, Austria, Egypt, Perú and Portugal.
Q: Was it only bridges he designed?
A: No! He also designed the inner (interior) structure that supports the Statue of Liberty in New York. You may know that it was a gift from France to the USA.
Q: Indeed! He made bridges, viaducts, low (road) networks and railway stations, but he is well known around the world for the construction of…
A: Yes, of course, his tower, the Eiffel Tower, has surprisingly come (become) the symbol of France. He would have been very proud of this.
Q: Why was he called the magician of island (iron)?
A: Is that what they called him? How nice. He loved (liked) iron because it is strong and iron constructions, as he used to tell (say), can be very high, elegantly trying to reach the sky, offering its light to the world above (below).
Q: We knew that Mr. Eiffel was an architect and engineer, but we didn’t know he was also a poet!! Thank you for telling us about your great-grandfather.
