This research essay provides a glimpse into the history of photography and its techniques
before the digital era, focusing on the optimization of a specific technique known as
cyanotype.
The research is divided into two parts. The first part delves into the history of cyanotype,
exploring the chemical reactions involved and exposing the significant role of women in
history, as well as the historical invisibility of their contributions, among other theoretical
aspects.
The second part consists of various experiments focused on optimizing the production
of a cyanotype. These experiments give us data about the influence of lighting and
exposure and the impact of paper grammage, and drying time. Additionally, it is explored
the possibility of obtaining cyanotypes in different colors through toning processes.

MANTENIT EL pH A RATLLA

Contingut:

“The pH, apart from being a parameter for classifying fluids or any kind of solutions, is a crucial
factor when it comes to living organisms. The pH many a time determines the possibility for an
environment to bear life or not.
One of the main components of living organisms are proteins, which, in turn, are biomolecules that
are extremely incapable of tolerating pH variations, even if they are only tenths of a unit. Then,
given the exaggerated influence pH has on life and the narrow margins that living organisms put
up with when it comes to it, substances which are capable of maintaining the pH - called buffer
solutions - have appeared through evolution. They are capable of keeping the pH at bay, that is to
say maintaining it constant. Buffer solutions are extremely important, as they determine in many
cases whether life can exist or not. Besides, because of this relevance buffers present, any of the
fluids in our everyday life can act as buffers, including body and environmental fluids, or even some
beverages.
This project is structured in two parts. Firstly, there is a theoretical part, which has involved the
process of carrying out an exhaustive study about everything which has to do with pH, acids, bases
and the aforementioned pH buffering capacity. This has been done through research, either from
online pages or text books. On a different note, the practical part is based on several experiments
in relation to the buffering capacity of pH of liquids of different origins, either drinks or body fluids,
among others, and its justification based on their chemical composition. In addition, the study of
the behavior of commercial buffers of acidic, neutral and basic media in dilution with water has
also been included, as well as their buffering capacity. Finally, a determination of the acidity and
basicity constants of various acids and bases has been carried out. All this has been executed
through the design of an experimental method which was possible in the institute's laboratory
surroundings, using only the material found there.”

the following resea rch essay, is mainly based on the constant R of the gases, dividing its contents into
two parts; the theoretical part and the practical part. In the first one, I try to search and understand
the origins and appliances of this constant, as well as its most practical and known uses in real life. In
the second one, I carry out four different experiments, by using common materials and substances,
so as to determine the constant R of the gases in the most exactly way, and prove that they are truly
useful methods.

Since music became part of my life, I have thought about any kind of rhythms and
melodies every single day. Now, I know I couldn’t live without music, it would be
impossible for me. Luckily, not giving up when I started playing the violin has
made me able to discover other musical instruments such as the guitar, the focus
of this work, and the drums and the bass guitar, besides understanding music
and staring at its magnificence. Almost all I have learnt about music, is thanks to
Orfeó Lleidatà, the place where I have musically grown, and I will be eternally
grateful.
As regards to what this work deals with, I wanted music to be involved in it, and I
finally decided the guitar would be the chosen instrument. The aim is to study as
well as know which phenomena are taken part in a guitar when it is played. From
when a string vibrates to how these vibrations are turned into sound. Some
amazing experiments will be explained to reproduce and analyse these stunning
phenomena.

When having to come up with a topic for my research project, I had clear that the only way I
could enjoy it was by mixing my two passions, science and roller-skating.
This research presents the study of the physics that are related to roller-skating.
Firstly, it explains the technical elements related to the investigation, such as the mechanic of
jumps and spins that contemplates Catalan Federation of Roller-skating, the parts of the skate
and the physics that the experimental part needs.
The experimental part is divided in six experiments. First, it studies the centre mass of different
equilibriums and positions related to the sport, then, the inertial momentum of a jump and a
spin depending on the position of the skater. Next, the variation of the angular speed and the
conservation of the angular momentum associated to a spin. It has also been made a cinematic
and energetic study of a recognized jump, the force that a skater makes when jumping and the
force that infringes the ground when receiving it. Lastly, it investigates the efficiency of the
wheel tread of different types of hardness of the skate. In addition, an explanatory video on
Newton's laws has also been made.

project's objective is to learn as much as possible about the structure of DNA related to
physics concepts and the beautiful’s Rosalind Franklin’s history.
A complete study of physics which is occulted by our genetic material through a laser
light was carried out, followed up with research into maths formulas. Rosalind Franklin's
experiment will be modelled using a pen spring instead of DNA and laser light instead of
X-rays since diffraction occurs when the wavelength of the incident radiation is of a
similar size to the holes through which affects. From photograph 51 which took Rosalind
Franklin, it was determined that the diffraction pattern was consistent with a double
helix structure of DNA and the helix radius and helix pitch could be determined. The
reason will be justified and an estimate will be made of the diameter of the helix, the
pitch of the helix (P) and the distance "d" between two consecutive parallel lines of the
spring.
From the data gathered, it will be studied the professional and personal career that

Soap bubbles seem magical. With its iridescent colours and iridescent shades. Light and floating. Children
all over the world are amazed by looking at them carefully. But what is behind the magic, behind the
entertainment? This work aims to discover it.
This paper addresses these questions and many more. Delving into the world of bubbles from a scientific
perspective, dealing with disciplines such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and technology.
The essay is divided into two parts: a theoretical and a practical one. In the theoretical part, a great
diversity of phenomena that intervene in the formation of bubbles is scientifically explained, for example,
surface tension or the theory of interferences. Within the framework of this part, a brief gender study was
also carried out on Agnes Pockels, a scientist who was a pioneer in the study of surface tension in polluted
waters. His studies served, among other things, to understand the existence of soap bubbles.
On the other hand, we find the practical part of the work where all those theoretical aspects treated in the
first one are experimented with. They are carried out from demonstrations, and experiments that allow us
to relate different phenomena present in the bubbles. The characteristics of the bubbles are studied;
observations are made as well as questions that have arisen throughout the theoretical work are
deepened. Also, we extrapolated the science of soap bubbles to other fields such as nanotechnology or
architecture.

I do not know anyone who has at least once in his life been fascinated by the splendour of the Sun. Since the first civilizations and cultures, the Sun has been very present and relevant in them. The Sun, being the closest star to Earth, allows us to study its operation and structure. Like all stars, it is in constant activity and evolution, and these, when they arrive in Earth, go a little unnoticed, but it does not take away the fact that they are very important. For this reason, my work tutor Anicet Cosialls, and I, a student, Belén Vicente, have carried out an astrophysical study where we have study some phenomena that take place in the Sun, as well as some of its magnitudes. The entire study has been carried out with the simplest possible material available to everyone and using methods as simple as the darkroom. In this work we have studied and estimate the rotation period, the solar constant, the luminosity, the distance from the Earth to the Sun, the temperature, the gravitation field, the mass, the life cycle and the CME’s speed. In addition, we observed the Sun with different methodologies.

This research presents the study of the non-linear and unstationary aerodynamics associated with the autorotation movement exhibited by the samaras with a paper model (that we will refer to as Twister or paper helicopter).

The investigation is divided in three sections. The first one consists in a bibliographic study of the physical principles related to aerodynamics and the rotation dynamics.

Then, in the second part, of experimental aspect, we have designed and built different paper helicopters to find which characteristics observed in the samaras (we have elaborated an herbal to know which geometric features are the most differentiated between the various species) allow a maximum descent time. This research, has been developed through the cinematic analysis of the frames captured by a camera of video, thanks to the analysing programme Tracker.

Finally, we have intended to give an explanation at the helicopter movements using the physic laws studied in the first section.

In this project we studied the reaction rate of the hydrochloric acid with the sodium thiosulfate. We tried to establish the reaction order of the two reagents using the sulfur produced in order to find the reaction rate. The sulfur makes the ambient to become opaque progressively, so using a light sensor and a light we could know the rate if we know when the reaction starts and when the light that pass through the ambient is 0. We also made an experiment to find the influence of the temperature on the reaction, using the light sensor to know the reaction rate as well. Finally, we also studied the reaction rate applying a catalyst, iron (III), specifically iron(III) chloride.

This research essay aims to set out, develop and assess hand-made methods based on the polarization and refraction of light that allow to experimentally determinate the concentration of sugar in soft drinks. Therefore, in this essay you will firstly find a synthetic theoretical framework about light and its wave phenomena, and, afterwards, a practical part that is divided into two blocks: polarimetry and refractometry. In both of them it is initially explained how to measure the sugar content of some drinks by means of a laboratory polarimeter and refractometer, and, subsequently, it is shown how to economically reproduce these devices and how to carry on that same experiment with them. At the end, it is expounded a qualitative global valuation of the obtained results, as well as a personal conclusion.

This research essay is based on conductometry, an under-utilised branch of the electroanalytical chemistry. In an attempt to defend the potential and advantages of this method, it has been divided into three parts. Firstly, it researches the variation of the conductivity in solutions within the concentration; secondly, it determines the concentration of acids and bases in solutions, by using the so-called conductometric titrations. Thus the numerous applications they can have on the analysis of everyday products such as the determination of the phosphoric acid concentration in Coca Cola, or the citric acid content in a chewing gum. In fact, the results obtained are compared, when able, with the published by the producers, and the relative error committed is quite low. Finally, the lowest molar concentration detected by this affordable technique is established, a characteristic in which it leads the list of electrochemistry methods. This characteristics make the conductometry to be used by alimentary and chemical industry, further by biologists to determine salinity and purity of the waters.

LES CONSTANTS DE LA NATURALESA

As well as Bohr’s model rested on three irrefutable postulates, the three pillars this paper will be based on are such transcendental constants as Planck’s , Avogadro’s  and the speed of the light in vacuum . Thus, among a review of the history and the importance of these three parameters, the aim of this exhaustive research is to experimentally determine the value of numbers as common in well-known theories as the three previous constants. While ensuring to apply as many light-based methods as possible in order to commemorate the Light International Year (2015), the different experiences carried out to find the Avogadro’s constant’s experimental value will also allow us to find the one from the electron charge , the gas constant  and Boltzmann’s constant .

Finally, it’s remarkable to say that all the experiments which are used to achieve our objectives will be followed by a detailed description (so that everyone could reproduce them) and by a complete section – where no knowledge is assumed – to illustrate the physical reason of every subsequent step. All this to praise the everlastingness and immutability of nature...

El GENERADOR DE KELVIN

Institut Guindàvols

Contingut:

In this essay we are going to get ready to discover the secrets the Kelvin generator hides, a device that creates high electrostatic potential differences from the fall of water streams through two metallic rings. The project is very interesting since, in spite of being a spectacular device, the Kelvin generator is quite unknown in our territory and there is not much published information; because of that one of the objectives of this study is to introduce it to the society around us. This work is distributed, in general, in four parts: the previous knowledge, where all the concepts related with the generator’s properties are clarified; the design and construction of the device, where we make our own model; the realization of the necessary tests in different conditions of structure and of environment; the obtained results, analysis and discussion, where we comment the extracted information from the different tests. The conclusions we have extracted about the generator’s operation from the tables of results are that the device only works with polar liquids and that the potential difference is influenced by the structural and environmental conditions as the humidity, the type of used liquid, the diameter and the length of the skirt of the rings and the speed water streams pierce the rings.

The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth and the only body in the solar system we can see without the help of any instrument. For this reason with this research essay has been tried, to show the moon from a closer view. By capturing different images of each part of the Moon and by mean of careful study of each of them, a map composition that shows our satellite has been built. Then the same map in 3D was set up. Also were identified the more relevant lunar craters and formations and the characteristics, height and diameter of some of them were studied. We can conclude that with the proper tools it is possible to deepen into the study of lunar morphology.

Key words: lunar map, lunar crater, lunar topography, morphometric data

In this research essay, the history of crystal radio sets will be analysed together with the most important people and precursor inventions that made it possible. The functioning fullfilled by each element both in conventional radios and crystal radios will be analysed as well;.Thus, in order to study this process two types of crystal radios will be built. Only for one of them, the use of use a program called PCB Wizard 3.50 Pro to design the printed circuit and have it processed will be needed. With both crystal radios, different parameters will be modified to check out their effects on the crystal radios, and therefore with the obtained results we can have a deeper knowledge on the functioning of crystal radios.

This research essay was an initiative of Anicet Cosialls. When I read the title, it caught my attention since it combined two things I like, Physics and Music, therefore, I found a good way to learn more about these two concepts.

The flute is an instrument consisting of a tube mechanism which by air runs.

By means of this project we will explain how some tubes can sound using basic sound concepts, such as sound it self, frequency of sound, and the existence of waves that make it possible. How to build tubes with different sounds and colors will be shown and finally, 40 tubes will be built and a musical performance will be played using all this tubes.

Our objective is to obtain a set of detailed information about the topic that we will work on. Doing this, we will get to know more about concepts such as the ultraviolet radiation, the injuries that it can produce to the human body, suntan lotions, factors of protection and the different types of sunglasses and the importance that they have for our eyes.

Later, we will design and construct an ultraviolet radiation box, with which we will be able to carry out experiments in which we will study the protective power of suntan lotions and sunglasses made from different materials that react to ultraviolet light. With these results, we will be in a position to make different conclusions.

From the beginnings of life, man has considered to study the world but the universe that wraps him. The Egyptians and the Greeks were the first ones that started doing estimations and calculations of the simplest astronomic measures.

My essay consists in doing some easy astronomic estimations, from experiments previously done: as one example, the dark box, created by myself, or the experiment of the calculation of the distance between the Earth and the Moon, which was done for the first time my physics teacher, Anicet Cosialls.

To be able to do these experiments, it is necessary to have neither technological or very complicated devices, nor impressive telescopes; the whole material that I have used, is the one that can be found in any laboratory or that you  can make yourself.
