Introduction

This unit called “Collective Sports” includes 19 lessons of 60 minutes each, whose the aim is to learn and practice three different sports: rugby, hockey and cricket. Therefore, I have divided this unit into three subunits:

Subunit 1: Rugby (invasion game); 8 lessons.

Subunit 2: Cricket (fielding game); 6 lessons.

Subunit 3: Hockey (invasion game with an implement); 5 lessons.

The main aims are mentioned in this unit . I have also developed the aims, the contents and the planning as well as the assessment for each sport. In the developing of the lessons, some pictures and diagrams can be found to clarify some concepts. As I have not mentioned the cooling down part in this unit about collective sports, I would like to add that in this part of the lesson we will do stretching.

There is also a teacher's guide which includes a justification of the topic, the progressive process in teaching and learning games/sports, what we need to take into account in the developing of the lessons (facilities and equipment, area and safety), and an explanation of the rules of the three sports taught. In the teacher's guide we can also find some material we can use in the developing of the lessons to help us as a teacher and to help our pupils, and the English vocabulary we want our pupils to acquire.

As a teacher, and depending on the age of our pupils (6-12), I do not want a premature specialization of the specific skills involved in these sports; neither a lack of deepening. What I intend is to practice the basic skills – passing and reception, throwing and catching, jumping, etc. through the rugby, the cricket and the hockey game and their specific skills. I also want them to practice with different kinds of implements; sticks and bats, and look for the best solution in the game situations depending on whetther they are in a defender or attacker position. I would not only like my pupils to learn the specific skills involved in the three sports, but also to appreciate the common aspects they can transfer from one sport to the other.

Although the lessons have been constructed in this particular way, it is not the only way they can be taught. There is flexibility for teachers to teach them in any order depending on the characteristics of the class. For example, in my class there are only 8 pupils, therefore, I will have to change all the games where more than 8 players are required like 5v5, 6v6 or 8v8 games. In all these cases, I will have to play a 4v4 game.

In the subunit rugby there are three repeated lessons, the lesson 4 is the same as the 3, the lesson 6 is the same as the 5, and the lesson 8 is the same as the 7. Thats is because there is not enough practice for pupils to acquire their aims and to practice their contents with just one person. Besides, some of the activities in those lessons ae used to assess some aims; therefore, pupils need time to practice the required skills.
